Huel Review: One Month In

by Peter Fields

Huel often popped up in my social media feeds and my curiosity finally got the better of me. Here is my review of Huel after one month of usage, with the goal of losing weight.

If you want my opinion on the best way to consume Huel, jump down to the end of the article.

What is Huel?

For those of you who don’t know, Huel is effectively a meal replacement drink. According to the official website:

Nutritionally complete, convenient, affordable food with minimal impact on animals and the environment.

The idea is that the powder contains all the calories, nutrients and vitamins that the body needs in a simple to digest format. When mixed with water it can replace a meal with no deficiencies.

What attracts me to Huel is its affordability, no food waste, it’s high quality and environmentally friendly.

First Week

I ordered two bags of Huel, Vanilla and Berry flavour and received a free shaker and T-shirt in the box. The T-Shirts are awesome by the way.

Excited as I was for this new wonder-food, I filled the shaker with water and threw in a load of Berry flavoured powder. It wasn’t nice, BUT there’s a reason why.

So I did my research and found lots of little tips and tricks. Mainly I started preparing my shakes in advance. Now the next sentence is the most important of the article.

Huel tastes 1000% times better cold.

The first time I mixed the Berry flavoured Huel it tasted like water with quaker oats mixed in. But magically, after a few hours in the fridge, it was a lovely thick, berry tasting milkshake. Game on.

Initially, I would get hunger pangs throughout the day, but after 3 or so days they went away.

Second Week

Please note that this is personal opinion/observation, and it may be different for everyone. After the initial hunger pangs, things got flipped turned upside down. Suddenly I would always feel full up, and then when it was time to eat I wasn’t sure if I was hungry or not. I ate anyway.

I found it easier to be around food and not be bothered that I wasn’t the one eating it. Yes, it came as a shock to me too.

Now I like structure in my life, no matter how badly this article is structured. I found it very easy to prep a shake in the evening for the morning and proceed to wash the shaker and prep another shake for lunch.

Weight Loss

I’m sure some people will believe Huel is for weight loss, while others will say its for maintaining. Some would even say its for gaining weight and training.

Huel is whatever want it to be. Just acknowledge that it does contain calories, if you eat few calories you will lose weight. If you eat too many calories you will gain weight. Simples.

My intention during my test of Huel was to lose weight and after 1 month I lost 4kg (8.8lbs). Don’t however naturally assume this will be possible for you. First of all, I started overweight, 17st for 6″2in.

I wanted to begin by losing roughly 0.5Kg per week but since I was managing hunger well, I naturally gravitated more towards 1Kg per week. This won’t be sustainable over time, but I’m enjoying it for now.

How I Huel

Now the way I’ve been running my Huel schedule is simple. I originally took 100g of Berry flavour in the morning (400cal), followed by 100g at lunch and then I would eat with my wife and daughter late in the evening.

As I previously mentioned, I never felt hungry so I decided to start only taking one 100g mix at around 11 am which would easily tide me over until the evening. I drank coffee in the morning and didn’t stop myself having a cup of tea when I felt like it.

I ordered the flavour boosts separately and tend to mix up the flavours every day. I’m not a huge fan of Coffee flavoured Huel, but every other flavour I have tried so far is delicious. Especially Chocolate and Toffee.

My Huel Tips

  • Measure Huel quantities with some scales. It’s the fastest and most accurate way, especially if you are looking to lose weight. I use these.
  • Prepare Huel in advance and leave it in the fridge to cool and thicken.
  • Try mixing Huel in a blender with some real mixed berries. It tastes awesome.
  • Adding Ice doesn’t have the same effect as leaving it in the fridge.
  • I use this Kenwood Sport Blender for quick and smooth preparation.
  • Improve your fitness at the same time with some physical activity, for example, Freeletics.
  • Bonus Weight Loss Tip: Weigh yourself every day but only pay attention to the average for the week.

This article will surely evolve over time, I will add and edit certain elements as my experience and opinion changes.

I hope this article has been informative and helps you make your decision on whether to try Huel or not. My experience so far has been very positive and I can’t see any reason as to not continue.
